Bowen Therapy
What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen therapy is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy developed in the 1950’s and 60’s by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia.
It is a gentle bodywork which may help support a wide range of injuries and conditions, both acute and chronic.
Bowen Therapy is holistic, and may support every system in the body by restoring balance via the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). The ANS controls 80% of bodily functions sub-consciously and is very susceptible to external stressors.
Nowadays, most people live in a constant state of high stress leading to ANS over-stimulation, ie, in a state of fight, flight and freeze, also known as the ANS sympathetic state. Healing can occur only after the ANS shifts from a sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance ie, rest, relax and repair. Bowen seems to catalyse that shift.
Bowen uses precise, and subtle, yet powerful, moves to send neurological impulses to the brain, which, given time, sends impulses back, via the ANS, to the whole body.
‘The body remembers what the mind forgets’ J.L.Moreno
Illness, injury and trauma can have a lasting impact on us; Bowen may help to reset and restore balance, allowing the body to heal.
Who may Bowen Therapy support?
Bowen Therapy is suitable for any age, from the newborn to the elderly.
It may be used in all degrees of health, eg, during short term and long term sickness, pregnancy, pre and post-surgery. For acute injuries such as a sports injury the sooner Bowen is applied, the quicker the recovery may be.
Bowen Therapy may also be enjoyed as maintenance by those who are fit and healthy, as we like to say, “Every Body Needs Bowen”
What may Bowen Therapy support?
The Bowen Technique supports the musculo-skeletal framework, the fascia, nervous system and internal organ systems.
The body's integrated response supports circulation, lymphatic drainage, the assimilation of nutrients, and elimination of toxins.
